Ever felt inspired by the Hidden Lane?

Our tenants have always been very creative people – we plan and like it that way.

Every week we also see folks visit the Lane with cameras, we’ve been featured in countless magazines and books, our colourful walls have been the backdrops to many fashion shoots, we’ve featured on coasters, t-shirts and we’ve even been in a Bollywood movie.

We thought it would be fun to have a good old fashioned Art Competition and we have some pretty cool prizes for the winners in each category. We are not in it to make money or to misuse the rights to your work – we genuinely just want to celebrate our magical little corner of Glasgow and hope some of you will want to join in. So be it a sketch, a painting, a diorama, a graphic poster, a photograph, a scarf or even an ela’boar’ate crocheted hat for Truffles our resident pig we just ask that it’s clearly been inspired by our wee Hidden Lane.

Let’s make some…

There are three categories:

Drawing and painting

Photography

3D and Digital Art/Craft

Winners and all Highly Commended entries will be exhibited (and available for sale if artist wishes) in the Hidden Lane Gallery in Finnieston in December 2024 with an Evening Prize Giving Event.

First prize £150 Hidden Lane voucher, Second prize £100 Hidden Lane voucher and Third Prize £50 Hidden Lane voucher in each category

Our Jury has been formed from our talented community of Lane creatives.

Alasdair Watson (Photographer)

Alasdair Watson is a professional photographer and artist, working with families, community groups, cultural organisations, and other creators. He uses his photography to connect people, tell their stories, and help create joyful memories.

His artistic projects are passionately rooted in the landscapes and languages of Glasgow and Scotland, and his work can regularly be seen featured in exhibitions across the country.

Alasdair has been based in the Hidden Lane since 2017.

Beth Knight (painter/comedian)

A relative newcomer to the Hidden Lane, Beth is a fine art oil painter whose work explores emotions and the physicality of the female body. She has a Masters in Fine Art from the Academy of Art University in San Francisco. She has performed her show blending comedy and art “Who Told You to Be Small” at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. A feminist artist, her comedy and painting tackle the misogyny around the standards of beauty that kept her hiding her body for decades by diving into the fear with art and laughter.

Kym Parker (Kilo Papa Studio)

Kym Parker is the artist, maker & surface pattern designer behind Kilo Papa Studio and has been based in the Hidden Lane since 2021. Kym hand draws all of her pieces with fine liner pens (some taking tens of hours to complete). She  is greatly inspired by Scotland, its landscape, landmarks and culture alike.

She is currently in her topographical map era and describes her colourful maps as her children.

Joe Mulholland (Hidden Lane Imagineer)

From the striking triangles that make up the iron window in the Gallery to the quirkiness of the brick buildings and the colourful exteriors of the Lane, the inside of Art Collector and Photographer Joe’s head makes Charlie’s Chocolate Factory look like Shieldhall Recycling Centre. Joe knows the Lane better than anyone and is passionate about enabling small creative businesses to flourish. At 83 he is still actively developing and creating with absolutely no intention of stopping.
